* The Popcorn Hour C-300 –  The Extreme Networked Media Jukebox is the one used for the review so it’s not 100% new.

Popcorn Hour C-300 Review : Popcorn Hour is the consumer electronics brand of Syabas Technology, a pioneer in wired and wireless home entertainment, digital electronics and P2P mesh network broadcasting. They are the ones behind the Popcorn Hour Networked Media Jukeboxes and they sent me one (the Popcorn Hour C-300) one month ago to give it a test drive. If you are you still watching your movies with a VCR, I think you should read this review !

The Popcorn Hour C-300 is a Networked Media Jukebox. Powered by the Sigma Designs 8647 CPU and with added multi-language support, the C-300 comes with our NMJ v2 software

Packaging

First, I want to talk about the packaging. These days, most of consumer electronics brands spend a lot of money to design their packaging. Curiously, it often result in a plain white box with a product image printed on it. It appears that Popcorn Hour thought differently and it pays. The box is a simple carton box with a simple drawing of the product. Nothing fancy and I like that. This suggests that they preferred to invest the money to create a great product instead of a fancy packaging. The package contains 1x Popcorn Hour C-300 Network Media Jukebox, 1x RF Remote Control, 1x Power Cord, 1x HDMI Cable, Quick Start Guide and Warranty Information. Yes, you read right, the HDMI cable is included ! On the down side, they only included a quick start guide that contains instructions on how to connect it to your TV and a basic remote guide.
There’s no user manual so you’ll have to figure out how to use it by yourself. If you are familiar with this kind of product, you’ll be fine but if your last media player was a VCR, you might spend some time figuring out how to use it.

Hardware

The C-300 is kind of big compared the other media players (Roku, Apple TV, etc…) but it’s also different from these because it has a lot more features like a hard drive & optical drive combo rack and more audio/video Outputs (HDMI, Component Video, Composite Video, Stereo Analog Audio, S/PDIF Optical, Digital Optical).  The C-300 also includes a 2.5-inch color TFT display at the front and has plenty of network options (Ethernet 10/100/1000 Mbps Gigabit Ethernet, Wireless N USB dongle, MN-200). It’s also powered by the latest Sigma Designs SMP8647 800Mhz CPU with L2 Cache.

Remote

The PopCorn Hour C-300 comes with a RF Remote Control. It’s pretty similar to any moderm TV remote control. The remote is black with a shinny finish.

A Popcorn Hour Remote Control application is also available (free) for iOS and Android.

Software and Content

The C-300 has a a liquid smooth Adobe Flash based user interface that is user-friendly which mean it’s pretty simple to operate.
The Networked Media Jukebox (NMJ) automatically scans your media source and downloads useful information such as the cover-art, movie synopsis, cast and director. With the addition of multi-lingual support, you can enjoy your videos in your native language.

Support for a large range of media file formats such as AVI, WMV, Matroska (MKV),
MOV (H.264), XVID SD/HD, MPEG-1, MPEG-2 MP@HL, MPEG-4.2, MPEG audio (MP1, MP2, MP3, MPA), WAV, WMA, FLAC, OGG, JPEG, BMP, PNG, GIF, TIFF and more !

Also available is an Apps Market for your TV. Watch global news, listen to internet radio and stay in touch with friends on Twitter. With over 80 free and premium TV apps currently available, and even more on the way, there’s something for everyone!

Image quality

The image quality of the C-300 is high. Thanks to the HDMI 1080/24P support, you can enjoy better than Blu-ray quality video ! With support for Matroska’s MKV 3D codec and other Side-by-Side video, you can watch 3D movies or stream 3D video from the web. Just plug the C-300 into your 3D television and enjoy the show.

Bottom line

The Popcorn Hour C-300 is great ! It may not be for everyone (read “those who still use a VCR”) or those on a tight budget (it costs $349) but for those who are looking for an alternative to a media pc this might be a great solution !

Winner : We will pick 1 lucky person and announce the winner here on March 31, 2012

I love the function over form philosophy used when developing this – even if it is bigger than devices like the Roku or Apple TV. I also love the you can use Android devices to control the Popcorn Hour.

Improved picture quality would be the main thing for us to own a popcorn C-300 since we only have a VCR and DVD pair of players to use with our TV. That would benefit two pairs of older eyes considerably.

Thank You, Bob T
