Designed exclusively for breastmilk feeding.
Switching from bottle back to breast has never been easier. Calma was developed using evidence-based research on babies’ natural feeding behavior so you can enjoy your breastfeeding bond longer.
With Calma, the milk will only flow if your baby works and creates vacuum to remove the milk. This enables the feeding behavior learned at the breast to be used with Calma.

Calma Breastmilk Feeding Set Review : Recently, Medela introduced Award-Winning Calma in the United States and we got our hands on a Calma breastmilk feeding set for testing purpose.

Calma is the ideal alternative to breastfeeding for mothers who want to give their babies breastmilk.
It’s the only scientific based feeding device that helps to support the similar sucking behaviour of the baby at the breast.
So if you have to be separated from your baby then Calma provides the right feeding solution because Calma requires a similar sucking behaviour to breastfeeding using through a combination of tongue and jaw movements to create vacuum making it easier for babies to switch between breast and Calma.

Unfortunately, we haven’t been able to test this main feature simply because our baby is almost 8 months old and we stopped breastfeeding when she was 2 months old.
However, my girlfriend kept breast pumping and the baby is still breastmilk feeded so we were still able to test the product itself.

Calma is recommended for breastfed babies and not those who are currently bottle fed as they may find it difficult to feed but our baby had no problem figuring out how to use it.
Of course, this may take some time for some babies to figure out how to use it the first time. But with a little patience and help (by stimulating the lip as you would with breastfeeding), this will certainly work.

The one size/shape nipple is quite different from regular nipples. Calma may look a bit too long, but it fact, it is the perfect length.
Your nipple lengthens up to 2 times in your baby’s mouth while breastfeeding. As such, Calma was designed to reach a similar spot in your baby’s mouth as the breast.

Calma is not like the regular nipples because the milk only flows when the baby applies vacuum so babies can drink, breathe and pause regularly.
This is something that can’t be done with regular nipples as milk just keep flowing freely even if the baby is not actively sucking which often result in choking and/or milk spilled all over the clothes.
The vented nipple also helps reduce gassiness as the bottle is vented through the unique air control system.

Even if Calma has up to 5 parts (cap, nipple, top, base and lid), it’s still very easy to assemble and clean.
You will probably use the 5 parts only when you carry it as the cap and lid only help to keep the other parts clean while carrying.
Most of the time, you will only use the 3 necessary parts (nipple, top and base) which can be easily assembled by simply placing the silicone nipple onto top and inserting the top onto the base.

The package includes one all-stage nipple (no need to buy more nipples as one size is sufficient for the entire breastfeeding period, just as in nature.), one 5oz/150 mL bottle, one cap and 2 lids.
Calma is also compatible with all Medela breastpump bottles and cost around $19.99 which is kind of pricey for a single feeding set but considering the fact that you won’t have to buy extra nipples as your baby grows and all the benefits, it’s a good investment.

Pros
+ Easy transition from the breast to the bottle and back
+ Doesn’t drip
+ One size/shape nipple

Cons
– A bit pricey ($19.99)

Winner : We will pick 1 lucky person and announce the winner here on or around March 16, 2012.

I would love to try this bottle because I have tried a lot of other bottles including the breast flow bottles and my daughter does not like them I think the flow may be too fast. I am exclusively breast feeding her through hand expression.

I would love to win the Medela Calma! I have a Medela Harmony and love the product. My son is 8 weeks old and the first 4 weeks of his life we had to supplement. He had no problems going from bottle to breast. Since EBF’ing he can’t figure out how a bottle works. Several different bottles and nothing works. It’s not that he won’t take it it’s more like he can’t.
My son needs a product like Calma. I can not return to work and my income until I can teach my son to eat from a bottle.
Medela products are great. I love that they are making products like Calma. It is going to change the world and help a lot of babies. Thank you Medela and thank you SweepstakesLovers.
