Being a single parent since 1969, I had to create some very special Holiday traditions for me and my three children. One of our favorites was the little gingerbread men cookies from Little Debbie. We made a race of it to see who could be the first to find then on sale every year!!! Also the kids had their own idea of what made a balanced breakfast:: one said one day that it was an oatmeal cream centered cookie in EACH hand and a glass of milk on the table. My three are all grown up now and have children of their own, but we still have some really good memories about growing up with Little Debbie.

My dad and my mom used to always gather my two siblings and we would read “The Night Before Christmas” on Christmas Eve. We would first go to church to see my nana sing in the choir and then return home. We would finish up the homemade cinnamon bun dough (so it could rise over night) . We would get in the pajamas and curl up together and listen to my parents take turns reading the pages. When my dad passed away my mom carried on the tradition, every Christmas Eve she read from the same book after we had made the dough and gotten into our pajamas. I am now 25 years old and live in Nevada and my mom still lives in New York. I have been able to travel home most Christmas, but the last couple ones I have not been able to. We spend the Christmas Eve skyping with each other, we both get in our pajamas after we both make our cinnamon bun dough and she reads “The Night Before Christmas” to me, and this year my fiance. I think that being across the country is hardest around Christmas, but I try to still do all the things we did as kids. This includes reading “The Night Before Christmas”, but it also includes making homemade cinnamon buns! Which I will now do with my fiance! I hope when we have kids we carry these traditions on, simple and a good activities that allow you to spend time with family; which is the real meaning of Christmas!
